Choose which metadata tabs appear in the Metadata Review window

Overview

Tab Visibility controls which tabs appear in the Metadata Review window. Turn off tabs you don't use to streamline review; some tabs only appear for specific file types.

This changes which tabs are shown, not the metadata behind them.

When to Use

Use Tab Visibility to trim the Metadata Review window down to what you actually use. If you only work with images, hide the video-only tabs; if you only work with videos, hide the image-only TIFF tab. Hide any metadata category tabs you do not need so the review screen stays uncluttered. Archyv keeps at least one tab visible for every file type, so you cannot accidentally hide everything, and Reset brings the standard tabs back.

Requirements

  • No special requirements - Tab Visibility settings are available immediately
  • Changes apply to all subsequent Metadata Review sessions
  • Some tabs appear only for images (TIFF) or only for videos (QuickTime, Video, XMP)
  • At least one tab must remain visible for every file type; the last visible tab cannot be turned off

Tab Groups
All FilesToggles

The tabs shown for every file, regardless of type: Quick View, IPTC, EXIF, and FileInfo.

When to useKeep the ones you rely on; hide a shared tab you never open so review starts on the fields you edit.
ExampleHide a rarely-used shared tab so review opens straight to the fields you work in.
Images Only / Videos OnlyToggles

Tabs that appear only for images (TIFF) or only for videos (QuickTime, Video, XMP).

When to useHide the group that doesn't match your media — for example turn off the video-only tabs on a stills project.
ExampleA stills-only studio hides QuickTime, Video, and XMP so they never clutter review.
Metadata CategoriesToggles · 10 categories

Tabs corresponding to the metadata field categories — the same ten as Field Categories, with the same five on by default.

When to useShow only the category tabs you actually edit; this mirrors the categories you keep visible in Field Categories.
ExampleHide the Editorial category tab on an archival workflow that never sets editorial fields.
Custom TabsToggles

Visibility of the custom tabs you've created in Custom Tabs.

When to useToggle your own tabs on or off here without deleting them.
ExampleHide a seasonal “Exhibition Prep” custom tab between exhibitions, then re-show it when needed.

Tab order is set in Custom Tabs, where built-in tabs can be reordered but not edited.

Reset to DefaultsAction · Reset to Defaults

Restores the default tab visibility — every built-in tab on, plus the five default-on category tabs.

When to useUse to bring back hidden tabs after customising.
ExampleReset re-shows every standard tab after a focused project layout.

At least one tab must stay visible for every file type, so the last remaining tab can't be turned off.

Tips & Important Notes

  • Hide tabs you never open to keep the review screen focused.
  • If you work only with images, hide the video tabs (QuickTime, Video, XMP); if only with videos, hide the TIFF tab.
